Rentals Tape & Optical Drives
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO RENT BY THE WEEK?
We rent drives for $100 to $300 per week depending on the drive.
Prices are listed down 2 paragraphs (see below-which drives are included). We consider a week to be 7 days, and weekends are
included in the rental period. Shipping time (both ways-out &
back) is included in the rental period. For this reason, it is
best for you to choose Fedx Standard Overnight or FedX Priority
service when we ship to you and when you ship back to us. This is
acceptable to most people since the drive is usually needed in a
pinch anyway. Please note that the weekly rate is not pro-rated
on a daily basis if the rental is less than 7 days or exceeds 7
days or 14 days. We think this is fair because our weekly rate is
reasonable vs. buying plus for the risk we assume on a rental-we
generally like to get a minimum of 2 weeks rent ($200).
CAN YOU RENT TO OWN?
Our rental program is not a rent to own program. If you
decide after a few days or weeks that you want to buy the drive,
you can, but we will charge you the full purchase price plus the
weekly rental charge(s). We do this because some of our customers
end up keeping rentals too long and then they decide it would be
cheaper to buy the drive but this is not quite fair to us because
this short changes us on the rental and lessens the motivation
for our customers to return the drive within the terms of our
rental program. Most people let us know when the drive goes out
how long they expect to keep the drive.
WHICH DRIVES ARE INCLUDED IN THE RENTAL PROGRAM?
We rent you refurbished drives directly from our inventory.
So please be specific about the unit you are renting. For example
is the unit internal or external (mounted in a case)? Which model
do you need? Which manufacturer? Is it 3.5" or 5 1/4"
mounting-on internal units? Please enter all this information
into our online order form or give this informaton to your sale
representative when you are on the phone with us (see the how to
rent section below). Please make sure that when you order a
rental to specifically write in the form that is is a rental.
Most of the drives we sell and repair are included in the per
week rental program. Per week rental prices are listed below by
drive type.
Drive Type and Cost Per Week
QIC, TEAC, Syquest, Bernoulli, JAZ.......................$ 100
4MM, 8MM, MO, WORM, CD-R.............................$ 150
Libraries, Autoloaders, DLT, AIT. 9 Track, SLR........$ 300
3480/3490/3490E, Jukeboxes................................$ 300
Rental availability is subject to change without notice but
most of the models we have in stock. It is always best to check
with us beforehand via telephone, email or fax about a rental
units availability.
HOW DOES THE RENTAL PROGRAM WORK? What is the process?
Essentially, we take your order like it is a purchase order (sales
order) but we do not run your credit card until after the rental
unit is returned.
We ship you the drive with an invoice
stating the full purchase price (in case you decide to buy it),
weekly rental cost, drive model, serial number, etc., this action
takes the drive out of our inventory. Then we ship it to you
using the ship method of your choosing and when you are done with
the rental, you call or email us (mention your invoice number),
and we will give you a return material authorization (RMA) number
to send the unit back. Once we get the drive back, we re-invoice
you and charge your credit card (with some prequalified customers
we send them a bill). If for some reason we do not get the unit
back, we charge you the weekly rental charges plus the full
purchase price of the drive. So, it is best to buy the drive
early in the rental period if you know you want to keep it.
WHY SHOULD SOMEONE RENT A DRIVE?
Some of our repair customers do not like to be down when they
send a drive into us for repair, so they rent a drive first, take
the system down and put the rental in place, then they send us
the bad drive for repair, we fix it and send it back. Then they
take the system down again, take out the rental and put the
repaired drive back and return the rental to us.
Some customers just want to get data off an old tape before they
throw their broken down older drive away. They don't want the old
drive fixed.
And still other customers want to (on a one time basis) read
tapes sent to them or write tapes so they can send them to
someone else. This is referred to as media distribution.
Sometimes, our customers want to read 4MM tapes and put the data
on to 8MM tapes. We call this media or data conversion.
So, you can see there are all kinds of reasons why you may want
to rent especially if you plan on not keeping the drive for too
long.
